Renewable Energy in Europe: How Thermo Fisher Achieved 100%

In the contemporary landscape, sustainability has transitioned from being a mere option to an essential requirement.

Thermo Fisher Scientific has made a remarkable achievement in environmental stewardship by achieving 100% renewable energy across its European operations.

This achievement underscores the company’s dedication to minimizing carbon emissions and positioning the pharmaceutical sector toward a more sustainable future.

Renewable Energy: Thermo Fisher’s Dedication

The achievement of How Thermo Fisher Achieved 100% Renewable Energy in Europe serves as a testament to the company’s steadfast commitment to sustainability.

By securing a significant solar energy agreement, the biotechnology leader has reinforced its resolve to lower carbon emissions and embrace more sustainable alternatives.

Under the guidance of Marc Casper, Chairman, President, and CEO, Thermo Fisher has consistently exceeded climate objectives.

As Casper articulates, “We are driven by a profound mission to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. We also understand our obligation goes beyond enabling our customers’ success and extends to making the world a better place.”

In alignment with its mission, Thermo Fisher has collaborated with X-ELIO, a global leader in renewable energy development, to implement a 10-year solar virtual power purchasing agreement (VPPA).

This collaboration guarantees that all of the company’s European operations will be powered exclusively by renewable energy sources.

The Significance of Renewable Energy in Healthcare

The Lorca Solar Initiative: A Transformative Development

A pivotal aspect of this agreement is the Lorca solar initiative, which is anticipated to commence operations by early 2026.

This project, in conjunction with the Serbal solar initiative, will furnish Thermo Fisher with a dependable and sustainable energy source. The Lorca initiative, in which Thermo Fisher possesses a 73MW stake, is projected to produce around 150,000 MWh of renewable electricity each year.

This energy generation is comparable to the annual power consumption of more than 40,000 households in Europe.

Moreover, this initiative is in harmony with Thermo Fisher’s overarching sustainability objective of achieving 80% renewable electricity globally by 2030. The organization has also established a goal to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030, using 2018 as the reference year.

Partnership with Industry Leaders

Commitment Across the Industry

Numerous pharmaceutical leaders, such as GSK, Gilead Sciences, and Haleon, have engaged in this sustainability agreement. Nevertheless, Thermo Fisher is leading the charge in this initiative, promoting collaborative efforts to achieve substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Konrad Bauer, Senior Vice President of Global Business Services at Thermo Fisher, highlighted the significance of partnerships:

“By working together with our customers and suppliers, we expedite our collective journey towards net-zero emissions. Attaining 100% renewable electricity for our European facilities represents a major achievement.”

The Energize Initiative

Thermo Fisher actively participates in the Energize initiative, a program established in 2021 by Schneider Electric in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative.

This initiative aims to enhance the adoption of renewable energy within the pharmaceutical sector by targeting reductions in Scope 2 and 3 emissions.

By equipping suppliers with essential knowledge and resources to navigate renewable energy markets, particularly through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Energize facilitates a transformative shift across the industry.

John Powers, Vice President of Global Renewables at Schneider Electric, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, stating that “The Energize program seeks to advance supply chain decarbonization within the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, while also providing a framework for other industries transitioning to renewable energy.”

Key Achievements and Future Goals

During Sustainability LIVE: London 2024, Chris Shanahan, Vice President of Global Sustainability and Supply Chain at Thermo Fisher, highlighted the critical role of innovative technologies in expediting decarbonization efforts.

In 2023, Thermo Fisher reaffirmed its dedication to global renewable electricity by aligning with the SMI Health Systems Task Force’s joint supplier standards. The company has established ambitious targets, including:

  • A 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, relative to 2018 levels.
  • Achieving 100% renewable electricity for all U.S. facilities by 2026.
  • Ongoing collaboration with industry leaders to foster sustainable supply chains.

These milestones reflect Thermo Fisher’s commitment to sustainability, positioning the company as a leader and a model for other organizations within the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors.

The Future of Renewable Energy in the Pharmaceutical Sector

Thermo Fisher’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond Europe. The organization is proactively investigating renewable energy options for its operations worldwide. By incorporating solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources, it seeks to minimize its overall carbon emissions and set a precedent for environmentally responsible business practices.

The transition to renewable energy within the healthcare sector transcends mere corporate responsibility; it is an essential requirement. By adopting clean energy alternatives, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies can greatly reduce their ecological footprint while preserving high levels of operational efficiency.

Thermo Fisher’s sustainability framework demonstrates that large corporations can successfully shift to 100% renewable energy while fostering business expansion and profitability.
