Robi Axiata Forms SPV To Build Its Own Solar Power Park

In a significant move toward sustainable energy solutions, Bangladeshi telecommunications company Robi Axiata has announced an ambitious plan to establish a Solar Power Park in Bangladesh.

This groundbreaking initiative, revealed on Wednesday through a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marks a substantial step forward in the country’s renewable energy sector.

Revolutionary Green Energy Partnership for Bangladesh’s Telecom Sector

The partnership brings together Robi Axiata with two established green-energy firms, FloSolar Solutions and GreenPower Asia (a subsidiary of France’s Volta Groupe).

These three organizations will form a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) aimed at developing and operating a massive 100 megawatt-peak (MWp) Solar Power Park.

This collaboration represents one of the most significant private renewable energy projects in Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector.

The park will operate under a build-own-operate (BOO) model, with Robi Axiata serving as the exclusive customer through a long-term corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA).

Consequently, this arrangement ensures a sustainable power supply for the telecom giant while advancing Bangladesh’s green energy capabilities.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability Goals

Perihane Metaweh, Chief Technology Officer at Robi Axiata, emphasized the transformative nature of this initiative, describing the Solar Power Park as a “game changer” for the company’s sustainability strategy.

According to Metaweh, this renewable energy project will enable the telecom operator to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 68,200 tonnes annually.

“By securing 100 MWp of renewable energy through a CPPA, we are not only reducing our reliance on fossil fuels but also driving cost efficiency and ESG leadership in Bangladesh’s telecom sector,” she explained in a statement following the MoU signing.

This initiative aligns perfectly with global sustainability trends, as telecommunications companies worldwide increasingly seek to minimize their environmental footprint through renewable energy adoption.

Site Selection and Future Plans

Currently, Robi Axiata is actively searching for an appropriate location for the solar park. Although several potential sites have been identified, the final selection will only occur after completing a detailed feasibility study to ensure optimal placement and efficiency.

Additionally, the newly formed special-purpose vehicle will conduct a separate feasibility study exploring the possibility of equipping as many as 16,000 of Robi’s mobile base stations with solar energy.

Notably, this isn’t Robi’s first venture into solar energy; the company has been gradually adding solar capabilities to select base stations since at least 2022.

Taking Advantage of a Favorable Policy Environment

This ambitious renewable energy project comes at an opportune time, as the Bangladesh government has recently drafted policies that enable private entities to develop and sell power without requiring long-term government off-take agreements.

According to the Daily Star, Robi, FloSolar, and GreenPower Asia are capitalizing on these policy changes to advance their sustainable energy goals.

Moreover, this regulatory flexibility creates new opportunities for private-sector involvement in Bangladesh’s energy landscape, potentially accelerating the country’s transition toward renewable energy sources.

Benefits Beyond Environmental Impact

The establishment of this solar facility offers numerous advantages beyond environmental benefits.

First, it provides Robi Axiata with energy independence, reducing vulnerability to grid instability and power fluctuations that frequently affect Bangladesh’s infrastructure.

Additionally, long-term economic benefits include:

Cost Efficiency and Operational Advantages

By securing a dedicated renewable energy source, Robi Axiata positions itself for significant operational cost savings over time.

While the initial investment in solar infrastructure is substantial, the ongoing operational costs are considerably lower than traditional energy sources, especially as fossil fuel prices continue to fluctuate globally.

Furthermore, this move toward energy self-sufficiency creates a more predictable cost structure for the telecom operator, potentially allowing for better long-term business planning and resource allocation.

Industry Leadership and Market Positioning

Through this initiative, Robi Axiata establishes itself as a pioneer in Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector regarding environmental responsibility and sustainable operations.

This leadership position not only enhances the company’s corporate image but also potentially attracts environmentally conscious customers and investors.

Moreover, as global markets increasingly prioritize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria in investment decisions, Robi’s proactive stance on sustainability could translate into tangible financial benefits and competitive advantages.

Expert Editorial Comment

The Robi Axiata solar project represents a significant step forward in Bangladesh’s journey toward cleaner energy. As a developing nation facing growing energy demands, initiatives like this demonstrate viable pathways for meeting those needs while minimizing environmental impact.

Furthermore, the successful implementation of this project could inspire similar ventures across various sectors, potentially accelerating Bangladesh’s renewable energy adoption rate and contributing to national climate goals.

This project also creates valuable job opportunities in the renewable energy sector, from construction and installation to ongoing maintenance and operations, thereby supporting economic development alongside environmental protection.
